Kebbi State Government has commenced the distribution of free dry-season farming inputs and Ramadan food supplies to more than one million residents, in a move aimed at boosting agricultural productivity and supporting vulnerable households during the fasting period.
The exercise was officially flagged off on Monday at Haliru Abdu Stadium by Governor Nasir Idris alongside the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari.
Speaking at the event, Kyari described agriculture as a critical driver of Nigeria’s economy and a cornerstone of national food security. He noted that under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, agricultural development has been prioritised as a strategic pathway to achieving food sufficiency and economic resilience.
“A nation that cannot feed itself cannot claim full sovereignty,” the minister said, adding that the Federal Government has intensified efforts to accelerate food production and strengthen the agricultural value chain.
Kyari commended Kebbi State for aligning with federal initiatives, describing it as a leading agricultural hub whose sustained investments continue to support the country’s drive toward self-sufficiency, particularly in rice production.
In his remarks shortly after the flag-off, Governor Idris cautioned beneficiaries against diverting or selling the distributed items, warning that offenders would face strict sanctions.
He explained that the intervention, which was also implemented last year, reflects the state government’s commitment to supporting farmers and easing the burden on residents during Ramadan.
According to the governor, the items being distributed include power tillers, ploughs, herbicides, fertilisers and improved seed varieties, all provided free of charge to enhance dry-season farming and increase crop yields.
Idris expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for backing Kebbi’s agricultural programmes and for responding promptly to the state’s requests for support. He said the collaboration has strengthened Kebbi’s position as one of Nigeria’s leading rice-producing states.
The initiative, officials said, is expected to further consolidate food production efforts in the state while providing relief to households observing the Ramadan fast.
