The Organic Fertiliser Producers and Suppliers Association of Nigeria has urged the Federal Government to formally integrate organic fertiliser into the Presidential Fertiliser Initiative (PFI). The group says recognising organic products as essential, not optional, will improve national food production.
The association’s president, Alhaji Adams Musa, warned that Nigeria’s soils are steadily losing fertility, and many farmers now need safer, more affordable ways to boost yields. He explained that organic fertiliser can revive degraded land, enhance crop quality, support regenerative agriculture, and cut long-term costs for small farmers.
Musa noted that healthier soil and a cleaner environment lead to a healthier population, stressing that sustainable farming must anchor Nigeria’s food security, especially as climate conditions grow more unpredictable.
He praised government investments in local fertiliser blending through the PFI, saying the programme has stabilised prices, created jobs, and reduced dependence on imports. Integrating organic fertiliser, he added, would strengthen these gains.
The association also urged stricter enforcement of policies that reserve the importation of fertiliser raw materials for the Federal Government to curb substandard products and protect local producers.
Musa said millions of farmers would benefit from a balanced fertiliser system that values both organic and inorganic nutrients for long-term productivity and environmental protection.
