Abubakar Usman clinches grand prize as thousands throng Kebbi for iconic cultural spectacle

A fisherman from Maiyama Local Government Area has claimed top honours at the 61st edition of the Argungu International Fishing Festival, landing a massive 59-kilogram fish in a contest that drew large crowds to Argungu, Kebbi State.

The winning catch was recorded during the main competition at the Matan Fada River, where participants waded into the waters in a spirited display of skill and endurance.

Abubakar Usman’s haul secured him first place in what remains one of Nigeria’s most celebrated cultural gatherings.

Presidential aide Sunday Dare confirmed the outcome in a statement shared on X, highlighting the scale of participation and the significance of the event.

Abdullahi Garba of Argungu finished second after catching a 40kg fish, while Nasir Garba and another competitor shared third position with 33kg catches each.

Organisers announced that the overall winner will receive two vehicles, a cash reward of N1 million, alongside other prizes. Second and third-place finishers are also expected to go home with substantial cash and material rewards.

Established in 1934 to commemorate peace between the Sokoto Caliphate and the Kebbi Kingdom, the festival has grown from a historic peace celebration into a global tourism event.

Over the decades, it has become a cultural landmark, attracting visitors from across Nigeria and beyond.

Beyond the fishing spectacle, the multi-day festival featured traditional wrestling bouts, colourful dance displays, musical performances and exhibitions of indigenous crafts reinforcing its status as a vibrant showcase of northern Nigeria’s heritage and communal identity.
