Cocoa farmers in Osun State have received a significant financial push as WACOT Limited, working closely with the agricultural division of the TGI Group, distributed over ₦158 million in premium incentives to small-scale producers. The initiative is part of a wider plan to promote responsible cultivation practices and uplift rural farming communities across the region.
During a farmer appreciation gathering in Osun, more than 2,000 growers were rewarded for their commitment to quality production. At the event, 57 standout farmers received special recognition along with an extra ₦5.8 million for consistently meeting high standards and demonstrating strong dedication to sustainable methods.
The premium payment, known as the Sustainability Differential Payment, is aimed at encouraging farmers who maintain transparent, environmentally safe, and verifiable farming procedures. This effort aligns with the TGI Group’s mission to transform cocoa cultivation into a more ethical, accountable, and profitable venture.
Yosola Onanuga, who oversees Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability at TGI Group, praised the farmers for their hard work and discipline. She emphasized that the organisation values their partnership and remains committed to supporting their progress in the cocoa chain.
A major aspect of the initiative is the use of secure digital payment channels, ensuring farmers receive their incentives promptly and directly. This digital approach not only promotes transparency but also helps integrate rural producers into the formal financial system, offering them better access to banking tools and financial management resources.
Many of the beneficiaries shared how the support has improved their work. One farmer, Olaosun Rebecca, noted that the guidance and resources provided helped improve her crop output. Another recipient, Chukwuma Agha, mentioned that the lessons he received on climate-smart cultivation significantly boosted the performance of his farm. Both expressed heartfelt appreciation for WACOT’s continued assistance.
The gathering brought together cooperative leaders, company field officers, and local farming representatives, creating an avenue to reinforce trust and highlight the importance of sustainable practices. The event also demonstrated how farmers who follow approved methods benefit directly from their efforts.
Onanuga added that the organisation hopes to expand these interventions by introducing more training opportunities, enhancing digital payment adoption, and continuing programs that celebrate outstanding farmers. Through these actions, the company aims to strengthen the resilience and long-term growth of the cocoa sector while supporting the livelihoods of the people who depend on it.
